Study author responds to headline "Road from rags to riches can lead to an early death"

Articles in The Times(£) and Daily Telegraph on Tuesday 14th July reported that new research had shown that “the stress of overcoming prejudice and beating the odds appears to speed up ageing”. The headline in The Times ran “Road from rags to riches can lead to an early death” but in fact the researchers didn’t look at morbidity.

Professor Greg Miller, Northwestern University and lead author on the study responds:

“The outcome we looked at was DNA methylation. That’s it. Nothing on morbidity and mortality.”
