Join us at ESOF

22 July 2016

We'll be at the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF 2016) in Manchester, starting this weekend. We hope to see many of you there.

We hope to see you at our drinks reception on Tuesday 26th from 5.30pm to 7pm, to celebrate the launch of Sense about Science EU. Our new Sense about Science EU director Sofie Vanthournout is keen to meet and work with all of you who are interested in improving the use of evidence in the EU.

We will be at the Rain Bar, 80 Great Bridgewater, Manchester, M1 5JG (a few minutes from the convention centre).

Please RSVP online here.

We're also running a career workshop on peer review this Sunday and we are participating in two sessions exploring the role and impact of citizen science on 26th and 27th July:

Peer review: the nuts and bolts

Sunday 24th July, 10.55am - 12.10pm, Central Convention Complex

Julia is hosting this Sense about Science workshop giving participants the chance to discuss with experienced editors and researchers how peer review works, how to get involved, the challenges to the system, and the role of peer review in helping the public weigh up the reliability of research claims.

Citizen science in the EU. How to take a strategic approach

Tuesday 26th July, 8.30am - 9.45am, EuroScience Room

There is an increasingly lively discussion going on about Citizen Science and the relationship between citizens, researchers, policymakers and the media in Europe. Following a debate of these issues in Brussels in June at an event co-hosted with Elsevier and REIsearch, we have mapped out in an infographic the different relationships to enable people to take a more strategic approach to Citizen Science, to develop joint goals and to identify areas for collaboration. Elsevier will convene this session where we will present an infographic and ask representatives from the European Parliament, the European Commission, media and the scientific community, what are the priorities and are we creating an environment that is conducive to Citizen Science.

Can citizen science deliver to society?

Wednesday 27th July, 10.00am - 11:15am, Central Convention Complex

Challenges such as climate change, the global financial crisis and trans-border pandemics demand interdisciplinary, citizen-centric and user-driven problem solutions that put societal values at the heart of scientific research and informed policy-making. Will 'citizen science' bring a new way of communicating science with and for society? Síle will be speaking alongside panellists from across Europe to explore all aspects of citizen science, including how it might contribute to the future of science, it's educational potential, and the opportunities and risks.
