Sense About Chiropractic

A summary of the evidence surrounding chiropractic treatments

Chiropractors use the 'adjustment' of the spine via a series of physical manipulations to treat back problems, some also believe that this can used to treat a wide range of conditions unrelated to the spine.

It is important to test whether treatments are effective, whether the theory behind them is right or wrong. The Cochrane Collaboration review of 39 clinical trials concluded that there was no evidence that spinal manipulation was superior to other treatments for lower back pain or other, non-spinal, conditions. The effects of chiropractic treatments may be largely placebo or regression to the mean.
